The Battle begins

2012 November - 2015 March

It was whilst on a cruise with our friends, The Smiths, Elsie first started to feel unwell. She had a rasping cough and was devoid of energy. On our return I insisted she went straight to her GP and on 23rd November 2012 Elsie was rushed to Frimley Park Hospital. A scan revealed she had a ruptured bowel tumour. An operation carried out on the 24th November successfully removed the tumour, however, a subsequent scan showed there was significant residual damage to her liver and lungs which could not be treated by surgery. She battled resolutely for over two years bearing bravely the usual side effects of chemotherapy. However, in February 2015, she was advised that the treatment had failed to contain the problem and that her time left was only a matter of weeks. Elsie was able to enjoy Christmas in Dublin with the entire family but on returning home soon became poorly and was in and out of hospital for the next eight weeks. Finally, on the 4th of March she was transferred to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice where she was made comfortable and relatively painfree for her remaining few days on this earth. She died peacefully in her sleep at 1.05am on Tuesday 10th March 2015.
