Elsie left school and was first employed in Aberdeen working as a shop Assistant with AC Yule, a small glassware shop which specialised in mirrors. It is now one of the UKs leading glass processors. After 3 years she left to become a bus conductress (known affectionately as a clippy) with Alexander's buses. She worked mainly on the Aberdeen to Dundee route.
